    NEWYDD

    Awyren Alys

    Cyfaddasiad gan Ioan Kidd

Ar ôl i’w thad fynd ar goll mewn maes awyr, mae’n rhaid i Alys wneud ei gorau glas i ddod o hyd iddo. Mae hi’n chwilio ymhobman, hyd yn oed ar fwrdd awyren wag, a dyna pryd mae’r antur yn dechrau. A hithau wedi crwydro i gaban y peilot, mae hi’n penderfynu gwasgu un o’r botymau o’i blaen, wedyn un arall…ac un arall. Stori sy’n llawn hiwmor a fydd yn denu sylw plant 4 i 7 oed ac yn difyrru eu rhieni hefyd!

  • About me

Welsh-speaking Yorkshireman with a Belgian surname who studied baboon grunts at university

In 1977 I moved to Wales and joined the University of Wales Press where I rose to Deputy Director. In 2006 I established Houdmont Ltd, working for a variety of clients including CIM (The Chartered Institute of Marketing). From 2008 I became a full-time employee of CIM as Regional Director for Wales, subsequently adding Ireland and the Isle of Man to my responsibilities, as well as CIM’s Higher Education Group.

I gained Chartered Marketer status in 2000 and was made a Fellow of CIM in 2007. I resigned from CIM in 2015 having delivered success in membership growth, income generation and event attendances. In the last three years when member surveys were undertaken, Wales was voted the best UK CIM region for overall membership value. Particular successes included the establishment of the annual Brolio competition for students and Canmol: Wales Marketing Awards.

I have now returned to being a freelance, devoting my time to a variety of projects, both paid and voluntary. I remain Chair of Poetry Wales Press, which publishes under the prize-winning Seren imprint and in December 2015 I joined the Board of Trustees of the National Library of Wales. I am a member of the advisory Board of NetNeutrals EU, who provide Online Dispute Resolution solutions. Under my own Houdmont imprint I shall continue to publish Welsh-language books for children.

Following the establishment of the National Centre for Learning Welsh, the Welsh Government has appointed me to a Scrutiny Committee to advise on matters such as value for money and how the Centre is responding to Welsh Government policies.

I have extensive experience of the publishing industry in Wales having been Chair of Literary Publishers (Wales) Ltd (1999-2006); a member of the Welsh Books Council Marketing Panel (from 1991, Chair 2001-2006). I was a founder-director of Gwasg Taf Cyfyngedig and for seven years was a Board member of Sgript Cymru – Contemporary Drama Wales.

I was a regular contributor to BBC Radio Wales's Good Morning Wales programme for many years and have written for a variety of newspapers and business magazines (further details on my LinkedIn profile).

In my 'spare time' I play badminton and tennis.

    And others say ...

"Richard is astute, organized, an excellent manager, people centred and quite simply, a great person to work with." See more at https://uk.linkedin.com/in/richardhoudmont

  • Houdmont surname

    Belgian origins

The family name "Houdmont" can be traced back very probably to a village called 'Houdemont'. It is situated in the southern part of Belgium close to the Great Duchy of Luxembourg. Up to c.1620, a huge number of homonyms in the immediate surroundings have been found suggesting that the presumption is correct. An authoritative study (1890) by a Emile Tandel explains the etymology as follows: Houdemont, Houdremont in 1260 and Houdemont in 1270 also written as Houlmont, Houlemont, Houl, Hol = pit, cavity; the village is situated in a vale inbetween two hills.

Near Nancy in France is another place, Houdemont, where its name is given to an motorway exit. Here the French Marie-Thérèse Morlet, an authority in the matter of etymology, explains the surname as being of Germanic origin: Hildimund 'hild'=struggle, 'mund' = protection. Houdmont, being the contracted form of Houdemont.

How the Houdmonts arrived in Wales from Brugge via Sheffield is another story . . . Why they moved from the southern French-speaking part of Belgium to the Flemish Brugge is due to the fact that an ancestor was a Customs Officer and was often transferred to other places (which was very normal for that profession) and eventually the family settled north and north-west of the country and spread out. Due to marriage (Tournai) one single Houdmont left Flanders and his descendants moved more eastwards into Wallonia. More or less back to their origins.

A lot of Houdmonts were found in Wallonia. In 1795, due to an excusable administrator’s writing error one of them got the name of Houlmont (‘d’ often being pronounced ‘l’ in Wallonia).

With thanks to Paul Houdmont for the original research.
